Most back pain is treated conservatively, that means no surgery. You should see your doctor, especially if you have shocking pains down your legs or weakness in the legs. Remember when you are lifting to bend your knees, stoop down and keep your back straight. This utilizes your stronger leg muscles and does not strain your back. Sleep on a firm mattress on your side (you can put a pillow between your knees), or your back with a pillow under your knees. Your doctor can recommend exercises that will strengthen the muscles in your back.
