Chicken pox

I have seen a few patients with Chicken pox today.
The incubation period is about 2 weeks, so if you are going to get it, it will happen about 2 weeks after you have been exposed to it. Unfortunately chicken pox is contagious before the rash appears so you can catch it from someone before they even know that they have it.
It sometimes starts with fever and malaise, and then a few days later the rash appears. It is a generalised rash with fluid filled vesicles that eventually crust over. You are contagious until all the bumps are dried up, so please don't go to work or school until then.
You can take tylenol or motrin for the pain and fever and histal or benadryl for the itching. You can bathe as usual and use calamine or caladryl for the itching. Bathing with tamarind or sage leaves is said to help.
There is an anti-viral medication that your doctor can give you to help make the episode less severe if it is given in the first few days of the rash appearing, but you will still get better if you don't take the medication.

Hot Flushes

Those of us who are approaching middle age may be experiencing hot flushes, irregular periods, mood swings and difficulty sleeping. This happens as we approach menopause, which is when menstruation stops. You can consider taking Evening Primrose oil capsules 1000-1300mg once or twice daily to help with the symptoms. It takes a few weeks to see the difference, so be patient.
If your symptoms are severe and you feel like you can't function, please see your doctor.

Depression

Do you struggle with mild depression? Do you feel a bit down, depressed, and sad for no reason? Prayer, exercise, meditation, writing a journal and getting enough sleep will help, and you could consider taking St John's Wort. It's a supplement that helps with mild depression. You can buy it over the counter, try 300mg once to three times daily.
If you feel very depressed and cry most days of the week, have lost your appetite, are not sleeping well and have thoughts of harming yourself or others, you may be clinically depressed and you need urgent help from a professional. Don't try to overcome it all by yourself. Please see your doctor or psychiatrist as soon as possible.

Don't stop taking your medications

2/27/2012

If you have Diabetes or Hypertension (high blood pressure) you should focus on living a healthy lifestyle - lots of fruits and vegetables, water, and 30 minutes of exercise at least 3 times per week. Please see previous posts for more details.
You should still continue taking your medication and seeing your doctor regularly while you make these healthy changes. If your pressure and sugar normalise your doctor will be able to take you off your medications gradually.
Please, please, please, please! Don't stop taking your medications because you have decided to turn over a new leaf and get healthy. Your pressure or sugar may get dangerously high without your medications, and you may not realise it.
If your blood pressure or sugar is normal while you are taking your medications, that means the meds are working for you. You still need them. If you stop taking your meds your sugar or pressure will go up. It's only when your values start getting on the low side that your doctor will be able to reduce your medication.
Please make any dose changes of your medications in conjunction with your doctor. Nobody likes taking medication, but sometimes not taking them is much more dangerous.
