29 ways to get out of debt

2/29/2012

See below for 29 ways to get out of debt, or if you aren't in debt, to save money.
Financial stress will affect your health.

Tips from Dave Ramsey
Frugal Living
Cut cable. Welcome to 2012, where you can watch most of your favorite shows online. Put that $80-per-month cable bill toward your debt.
Stop eating out. If you don't know where all your money is going each month, we're pretty sure Wendy's can locate it for you.
Visit the library. Remember libraries? They have free books you can borrow! Free is a lot cheaper than Amazon!
Plan your grocery trips. Or, follow your stomach, who really doesn't care about your budget. Your choice. Get tips for cutting your grocery bill.
Learn the word "no." Learn it. Make it a new part of your vocabulary. Love it. Embrace it. Because, when it comes to money, you'll be saying it quite often. Practice with us now: "NO!"
Tell the kids to shut up. When it comes to money, the kids can be a worse guide than your stomach, and they don't care about your budget either.
Avoid expensive hobbies.
Sell your stuff. Or, better yet, if you have a skill for making something, put that skill to use by making stuff and selling it online.

The Dave Ramsey Basics
Sell the car! The average car payment is more than $400 per month. Everyone, say it all together: "Sell the car!"
Stop making excuses. If you don't want to get out of debt, then guess what? You're not going to get out of debt. To win with money, you have to change the way you think.
Cut up your credit cards. Shred ‘em. Burn ‘em. Shoot ‘em. Drop ‘em in a trash compactor. Cut ‘em up while skydiving. You'll never get out of debt until you stop making debt a way of life.
Use the envelope system. You spend less money when you use cash.
Get on a budget. So unoriginal, right? But it's true. You'll never get out of debt without knowing exactly where all your money is going.
Listen to The Dave Ramsey Show. Every day, Dave helps millions of people across the country find hope with their money. His advice will help you too. Listen online.
Merge bank accounts. If you're married, you and your spouse should share the same account. When you got married, "two became one," right?
Stop investing. Yes, you read that right. Once you're debt-free, then start putting 15% of your income into a retirement plan.
Use your tax refund to pay debt. The beach will still be there next summer. We promise.
Build your emergency fund. Start with $1,000. After you're out of debt, build the fund to three to six months' worth of living expenses.
Ignore your broke friends. Twenty years from now, you won't have a financial worry in the world, and they will still have car loans, mortgages and credit card bills. If they call you crazy, like Jeff and Crystal's friends did, you're on the right track!

Get Creative
Give more. Wait a minute … give more? Yes, giving changes your spirit. Make giving a priority in your budget and you'll see a difference.
Ask for a raise. Why not? Unless you're sitting at home reading this article right now, after calling in sick with a "sore throat" for the fourth time in three weeks. If that's the case, maybe you shouldn't ask for a raise.
Don't quit your day job. You're in debt, so you need money. Pursue your dream while you are working your day job. Learn how. When you're debt-free, you have so many more options because money isn't an issue.
Get a part-time job. This guy made nearly $20,000 a year delivering pizzas. No excuses!
Stay away from get-rich-quick schemes. If it smells like a pyramid scheme, then it's a pyramid scheme. Don't get hoodwinked by a smooth-talking salesman. Check out six scams to avoid.
Get in shape. Better health means fewer doctor's bills. Walk, run, lift, press. Just get off the couch and do something!
Read a book. Instead of watching mindless television, read a book … from the library that you've already visited for free!
Take a successful friend to lunch. Find someone who is doing things the right way—with money, with marriage, with life in general—and do what they are doing. Get to know them.

Come see me at the clinic if you are not feeling well or if you need a check up. Call 326-8221 for an appointment or walk right in.

Do you have a friend that you have been meaning to talk to for a long time, just haven't made that time to reconnect?
Why don't you drop them a line today? Send an email, post on their facebook page, send them a text, give them a call. Just let them know you are thinking of them. It may make a world of difference in their day. You may just turn their day around, and you will feel good too!

Don't stop taking your medications

2/27/2012

If you have Diabetes or Hypertension (high blood pressure) you should focus on living a healthy lifestyle - lots of fruits and vegetables, water, and 30 minutes of exercise at least 3 times per week. Please see previous posts for more details.
You should still continue taking your medication and seeing your doctor regularly while you make these healthy changes. If your pressure and sugar normalise your doctor will be able to take you off your medications gradually.
Please, please, please, please! Don't stop taking your medications because you have decided to turn over a new leaf and get healthy. Your pressure or sugar may get dangerously high without your medications, and you may not realise it.
If your blood pressure or sugar is normal while you are taking your medications, that means the meds are working for you. You still need them. If you stop taking your meds your sugar or pressure will go up. It's only when your values start getting on the low side that your doctor will be able to reduce your medication.
Please make any dose changes of your medications in conjunction with your doctor. Nobody likes taking medication, but sometimes not taking them is much more dangerous.

Feeling down?
Smile!
Just the act of smiling will make u feel better.
Look up at the sky, see the beauty of nature.
Count your blessings. Can you see, hear, smell, walk? Even if you can't do these things, there are still blessings to count.
Is there someone somewhere who loves you? God loves you too.
Smile. Let the corners of your mouth come up, let those eyes crinkle. Do u feel better?

Sprains and strains

2/20/2012

Sprains and strains are very common injuries. A sprain is a stretch or tear in a ligament (the bands of fibrous tissue that connect our bones at the joints).
A strain is also a stretch or tear, this time affecting the muscle itself or a tendon (the tissue that connect the muscles to the bones). Sprains usually happen when a person falls, twists, or is hit in a way that forces the body out of its normal position. Strains happen when a person twists or pulls a muscle or a tendon. The signs of most sprains or strains are very similar: pain and inflammation, and sometimes bruising, at the injured area. Depending on the severity of the sprain or strain, the pain may be mild, moderate, or severe.
Most sprains and strains can be treated at home, but if the swelling and pain is very severe, if you are unable to put weight on the injured area or are unable to move it, if it is not improving or seems to be getting worse, you should see your doctor for further evaluation. Even if the bone is not broken you may need a cast or crutches or other intervention.
Most sprains and strains can be treated at home with RICE therapy for the first 24-72 hours.
R: Rest. Try not to put weight on or lift with injured area for 24-28 hours.
I: Ice. Rest a bag of ice or cold bag of rice or peas, wrapped in a cloth, on the area for 10 minutes, take off for about 30 minutes then repply. Try to do this as often as u can in the first 24 hours. Don't leave the ice on too long, or apply ice directly to the skin.
C: Compression. Wrap or strap the area, this helps to limit the swelling.
E: Elevation. Place the injured area on a pillow and try to keep it up above the level of your heart. This also helps to reduce the swelling.
You can also take OTC meds to help with the pain - e.g. ibuprofen (Motrin/Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol/Calpol/Panadol).
Injuries like this can take a long time to heal, it may take 2 - 8 weeks to fully recover. Take it slow as you go back to regular activities, you don't want to re-injure the area. You definitely don't want to go back to sports or strenuous exercise while u are still in pain. If in doubt, please see your doctor.

You can do anything for 15 minutes!

You can do anything for 15 minutes! Have you been procrastinating about something? Is there something you need to do but don't want to start because you are afraid it will take forever, or be really unpleasant? 15 minutes is a short amount of time. U can manage to do almost anything for 15 minutes. Why not take on that big task? Jump in for just 15 minutes. You may be surprised how much you can get done in 15 minutes. You might even finish! Even if you don't finish, the task may not seem so daunting anymore, and it may be easier to jump in for the next time you have 15 minutes available. This applies to homework, studying, office work, house work, filling out forms, making phone calls, time with your kids, exercise, not eating (holding off on that snack you know you really shouldn't eat) ..... you can use this principle on almost anything. When the 15 minutes is up, stop.
Try it and see. See how much you can achieve. You can do anything for 15 minutes.

Most sore throats are caused by viruses

2/13/2012

Most sore throats are caused by viruses. This means that antibiotics are not helpful for most sore throats. Please don't try to persuade your doctor to give you antibiotics if he/she doesn't think they are necessary. You should get better in about a week, no matter what medications you take. You can take over the counter medications for pain, like Tylenol or Motrin, increase your fluid intake, and gargle with salt water.
You may need antibiotics if you can see white stuff on your tonsils, if you have swollen painful neck glands, a high fever, no cough, or a very bad cough with chest pain and/or shortness of breath, if you feel and look absolutely awful, if you are immunosuppressed for some other reason, or if it's your child that is sick and they are very young. Please see your doctor in these cases.
Come see me at the clinic if you are not feeling well or you need a check up. Call 327-6407 for an appointment or walk right in.

Benefits of writing in a journal

2/10/2012

Lots of research has shown the benefits of writing in a journal. Richard Wiseman in his book, "59 Seconds: Think a little, Change a lot", suggests 5 things that we can write about in our journals that will help us to feel happier, more content, and more grateful for our lives.
1. Write about things or people you are grateful for. Some people (including myself) have gratitude journals where we only write about what we are grateful for: great things that have happened, great circumstances and people. This helps to remind u that there are things that are going well in your life and helps you focus on the positive.
2. Write about the most wonderful experiences in your life. Describe the event and how u felt. This helps you to recapture the great feelings of those times.
3. Write about what you would like your ideal future to be like. Imagine that u have worked hard and have achieved all your goals and ambitions. Your dreams have come true. This helps to refocus you on your goals and gives you vision and hope for the future.
4. Thinks about someone important in your life and pretend it's your only opportunity to express to them how much you appreciate them. Write a note to them in your journal. If u want to give them the note... even better!
5. Think back over the past week and write 3 things that have gone really well for u. The events can be major - a promotion or new job, or trivial - like finding a parking space. Write about why u think each event went so well.
Writing about these things will help to focus you on the positive things in life, help you to re-experience the joys of the good things, recapture the love u feel for the special people in your life, give you hope for the future and put a smile on your face. Try it, u may like it!

Do you write in a journal?

2/9/2012

Do you write in a journal? Have you tried before and stopped? I always thought I had to write everything that happened during the day, and if I missed a couple of days there was too much to catch up on and I gave up. Several times. The journal is your tool tho, u can write as little or as much as u want to, as often or not as u want to. U don't have to be a slave to what u think a journal should be.
It has been shown in research that people who record what they eat in a journal (or other medium) lose more weight than those who don't. It helps u to be conscious of what u r putting in your mouth, and may help u to resist things u know u shouldn't be eating because u don't want to record it in your journal.
Journal writing helps u to process what is going in your life, it can help u get through traumatic events and stressful situations. Pouring out your anxieties and worries on paper helps you to overcome the feelings and move through them. You can write a vision of what u would like your life to be, it can be your prayer to God.
Cancer patients who journal and meet in support groups do better than those who don't.
Writing a journal can help you no matter what stage of life you are in.
Tomorrow I'll tell you what kinds of things you can write in your journal to help make you feel happier.
