Avoid constipation

7/27/2012

To avoid constipation, increase your water intake. Try to drink a glass of water before each meal - that helps you to lose weight also. Eat fruits or vegetables with each meal. Increase your fibre intake - eat your fruits and veggies, eat peas and beans, have brown rice and bread instead of white.
Exercise regularly, that also helps to keep things moving. Try not to strain, you are more likely to get hemmorhoids/piles that way.
If you still have problems, try fibre supplements like metamucil or benefiber, but remember if you take these you must drink more water, or your constipation may get worse. These supplements draw water into the gut, so you have to increase your fluid intake.
If you still can't pass, have blood in the stool or abdominal pains, please see your doctor.

Get everything done! Write a list!

I like to write lists. I don't remember things unless I write them down. I have found a new way to write lists, so if you are a list writer like me you may appreciate this.
It's called Superfocus. You write everything you want to do on the left hand side of the your note book page, leaving room for another column on the right. You can fill as many pages as you need to. You write the urgent things that you have to do immediately or today on the right hand side of the page, starting at the beginning of the first page.
When you are going through the list you cycle through the items on the first page and do what you can or what you feel like doing. You should not move onto the second page until you have dealt with all the things on the right hand side urgent column.
When you finish a task, cross it off. If u start it but don't finish it, put on the end of the right side urgent list. If it is a recurring task put back at the end of the left hand side list.
This forces u to deal with the urgent things before u move on to the non urgent tasks.
There is more info and detail on how to use this system at this website.
I have found it very useful. Being organised reduces stress.

Protect yourself from diarrheal diseases

7/23/2012

Protect yourself from diarrheal diseases by following this advice from the Ministry of Health:
Wash hands properly (with soap) after using the toilet and before preparing food.
Ensure all foods are properly cooked.
Ensure there is no cross contamination when handling, serving and storing food items. That means that you shouldn't allow raw meat, or surfaces it has touched, to be in contact with cooked food. Wash your hands and clean kitchen surfaces after handling raw meat.
Boil well water for 3-5 minutes to make it safe for drinking.
Chlorinate your well.
They say that city water is safe for drinking.

If you do get diarrhea, please see your doctor immediately if you show signs of dehydration: dry mouth, sunken eyes, decreased production of urine, or lethargy; if you have profuse, explosive, watery diarrhea or pass blood; or if you have vomitting and aren't able to keep any fluids down.
See my previous post on managing diarrhea.

Why worry?

7/17/2012

Why obsess over all the bad things that could happen in life? Why not dwell on all the good things that could happen just as easily. Which is more likely to occur? Bad or good?
If there is a 50:50 chance that what you are worrying about could actually come to pass, why not focus on the possibility that it could actually all turn out great. Use that worry time to visualise the positive things that you wish would happen to you and your loved ones instead.
Grab onto those negative thoughts and turn them into something positive!

Try to avoid artificial sweeteners.

Try to avoid artificial sweeteners.
Jon Gabriel says:
When I was struggling on one diet after another, when I
weighed over 400lbs, I remember how impossible it
was to get through the day without sugar...

... like most people, I was hooked.

Everyone knows sugar messes up your energy levels
and leads to weight gain - that's no mystery - but how
do you stop?

Unfortunately, most people do what I did - they start
using artificial sweeteners like aspartame. I'm talking
about Diet Coke, sugar-free candies and mints, and
even desserts.

Of all the artificial sweeteners out there, aspartame
tastes pretty decent. It's sweet, and it really does have
zero calories.  But at what cost?

----------------------------------------------------------
Jane Bowen, M.D. says:

"The fact that aspartame fattens people is generally
well known.... aspartame also poisons your metabolism
so you cannot burn calories."
----------------------------------------------------------

Aspartame has managed to remain on the "legal" list
of food additives since the 1980's - but legal does not
mean it's safe, and the truth is, it's not something you
should ever eat.

There are over 92 documented side effects from aspartame.
Here are 12 of the more common effects:
*impaired vision
*tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in ears)
*noise intolerance
*epileptic seizures
*migraines
*memory loss
*fatigue
*depression
*anxiety
*insomnia
*phobias
*weight gain

In case you missed it, read that last one again: weight gain.
Food manufactures would lead you be believe that "sugar
free" foods help you lose not gain, and yet, the reality is
quite different.

Sickle Cell Trait....Do you have it?

7/12/2012

If you are getting married, you should consider testing for sexually transmitted diseases, both you and your fiance, about a month before the wedding.
You should also test for sickle cell trait. Sickle cell trait does not make you sick, so you won't know you have it unless you test for it. If both you and your partner have sickle cell trait, there is a 25% chance that every time you get pregnant you could have a baby with full sickle cell anemia. There is a 50% chance that each baby will have the trait i.e. be a carrier and be able to pass it on to their kids. It won't make them sick.
With sickle cell anemia, the blood cells are abnormally shaped (like a sickle) and may get stuck in the blood vessels causing pain (sickle cell crisis) and organ damage. There is no cure for sickle cell anemia but there are ways and medications to help reduce some of the effects. Some people only realise for the first time that they have sickle cell trait when they have a baby with sickle cell anemia. Don't let it take you by surprise. Get tested.
See WebMD  for more info.

Diarrhea and vomitting seem to be going around again

7/2/2012

Diarrhea and vomitting seem to be going around again. They are often caused by a virus or something you ate. If it is not a stomach virus, conch, fish and fast food are the prime offenders. The most important thing is to stay hydrated, that is, to get enough to drink. You should take slow  sips of pedialyte or gatorade every time you vomit or have diarrhea to put back the fluids you are losing. If you are unable to keep anything down, please see your doctor urgently.
If you can tolerate the fluids, you are likely to get better on your own. When you feel better you can move on to solids. The BRATTY diet is recommended, Bread, Rice, Apple, Tea, Toast, Yogurt. Small amounts please. Avoid greasy or spicy foods.
If you have a high fever, can't keep anything down, have blood in your stool, have sever abdominal pain, or your symptoms persist, please see your doctor.
